Getting Started with Your Estate Plan
July 14, 2011 By German Law Group
Making the decision to begin your estate plan can be scary and stressful. This is because you will have to explore many issues and you may not understand what will be involved in the process.
However, know that taking the time to plan can be extremely beneficial to you and your family. We’ve taken the time to outline some pointers to help you get started with your estate plan. If you have any questions or if you’re ready to start your estate plan, speak with a qualified estate planning attorney.
1. Think about your goals. You will need to have some ideas of what you’d like to achieve with your planning. Do you want to protect your family? Are you looking to protect yourself in the event of an emergency? Do you want to have control over how your assets will be distributed? Are you looking to cut down on estate taxes? Take the time to carefully outline some of your goals. This will help your attorney help you create a proper plan.
2. Meet with your attorney. A qualified estate planning attorney will be able to help you throughout the entire planning process. It’s important to use your attorney’s experience. Discuss your needs with your attorney and ask questions so that you can better understand your options. As your attorney works with you, he or she will be able to create a unique plan that fits your needs.
3. Follow through with your planning. It’s important to keep up with your plan. Once you discuss your goals and needs, make sure that you take the time to actually do your planning! This will allow you to always be prepared. Additionally, you will want to keep your planning up to date. Your plan should be reviewed every 3 years to ensure that it still meets your needs. Your attorney will be able to help you make necessary updates.
Take the time to carefully plan out your estate. If you take the right steps, you can have a great plan in place for you and your family. If you have any questions about the estate planning process, or if you’d like to begin your estate plan, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney.
