Understanding CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) After an Accident

July 25, 2011     By Law Offices of Barry G. Doyle, P.C.

An accident can leave you with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
Auto accidents can be extremely dangerous and can leave victims with permanent damage. If you have been a victim of an accident and are now suffering from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), it is strongly recommended that you contact your Chicago auto accident lawyer. Set up a consultation to discuss your case and review your accident to decide whether or not an Illinois personal injury claim is right for you.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: The Effects and Complications

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a condition of chronic pain that is most often found in the limbs (arm or leg). This condition does not develop on its own, but rather after a serious injury, surgery, or sometimes a stroke or heart attack. CRPS can be identified as separate from pain directly related to the injury or surgery alone because the pain is disproportional (and much more severe and persistent).

You can identify CRPS by looking out for the following symptoms:

• prolonged burning or pain sensation;
• heightened sensitivity or temperature;
• swelling in the affected region;
• changes in skin color or texture;
• changes in hair or nail growth;
• stiffness or swelling of the joints;
• muscle spasms; and
• decreased mobility in the affected region.

The symptoms that appear will vary from person to person, but the most commonly experienced symptoms are pain and swelling in the affected limb. It is possible for CRPS to spread to more regions of the body, than the initial point, so it is important to try and catch the symptoms early on. If you believe you are experiencing symptoms that indicate CRPS you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Meeting a Chicago Auto Accident Lawyer: Illinois Personal Injury Claim

If your CRPS is not diagnosed and treated right away, it can lead to serious complications. It is possible that you may suffer tissue wasting (the beginning of deterioration of skin, bones, and muscle) or muscle tightening (contraction of the affected area into a fixed position).

You should not hesitate to file an Illinois personal injury claim with a Chicago auto accident lawyer if your Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is the result of someone else’s negligent actions. Living with chronic pain not only will take a permanent toll on you physically but financially as well. Medical costs for physical therapy and pain medication can add up rapidly. By filing a claim you may be able to receive compensation for your medical care.
