Sexual Side Effects of Zoloft

March 5, 2012     By McEwen Law Firm Ltd

Zoloft has been shown in several double blind studies to cause numerous sexual side effects for both men and women. Up to 70% of men on Zoloft experienced difficulties with ejaculation. For women on Zoloft, almost half experienced difficulties with orgasm. For both men and women, 12% had problems becoming sexually aroused, while on Zoloft.
Fortunate for most, Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction is not an issue, as most if not all of these severe sexual side effects disappear once the patient stops taking Zoloft. For far too many, however, Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction can last months and years after the patient stops taking Zoloft.

Zoloft is an antidepressant that is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Click for more information on How Zoloft Works. This category of antidepressants is among the most prescribed but also has the highest rate of causing sexual side effects. If this becomes a primary concern of yours, there are a couple of steps you can take to minimize these negative side effects. It may not be spontaneous, but if possible try to schedule sexual activity prior to taking the medication, as the effects may be more pronounced immediately after taking Zoloft. If that doesn’t work, speak with your physician about changing medications (i.e. Wellbutrin tends to have a much lower rate of negative sexual side effects) or adding a secondary medication to counter these negative sexual side effects.

Zoloft is a serious drug that should only be considered when the benefits far outweigh the risks. The decision to prescribe Zoloft should not be taken lightly by your physician and as a patient it is important to understand all of the risks associated with these antidepressants. Women should be especially cautious when taking Zoloft while pregnant and speak to their physician immediately about what risks they may be exposing their children to. If you are the mother of a child who has birth defects as a possible result of Zoloft, please contact us. We would like to hear your story and may very well be able to help you financially through this difficult situation.
