Settle Your Own Affairs

May 24, 2012     By John M. O'Drobinak, P.C.

Every new survey has a different percentage of Americans that do not have a Will or any other type of estate plan. The latest survey from Rocket Lawyer puts the number at 50% of Americans without a Will. If you are one of them, you should take some time to consider what will happen to your property after you pass away.
The truth is that some people might not need a Will. Everything they have can be quickly disposed of by the Laws of Intestate Succession, which usually leave everything to a deceased person's closet living relatives. For some people, this is a reasonable, if not ideal, situation. However, their estate will need to go through Probate and there can be a steep cost attached to that process.

For an ever increasing number of Americans, however, dying without a Will is not a good option. Intestacy laws have not kept pace with the changing look of American families. While there are a few people who can get away without a Will, the best option is for everyone to have one. It’s the only way to settle your affairs for yourself.
