The results from the 2011 American Community Survey, published by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2012 showed that the state with the lowest percentage of divorced residents was New Jersey.
The statistics revealed that only nine percent of New Jersey residents were divorced while 52 percent were married. The low divorce rate was attributed to several factors. These included higher education among those who were married, their age, their relatively mature ages before getting married, and ethnicity.

According to experts, couples who achieve higher education levels and who wait until they do in order to get married tend to have a lessened risk of divorce. Because they are older, more mature, and better educated, they tend to be more stable financially as well as emotionally. These factors lessen the likelihood that stress over money or relationship problems will cause a breakdown in their marriage.

New York and Massachusetts were also states with a lower percentage of divorced individuals. The same factors apply in these states as in New Jersey. A public policy professor at Johns Hopkins University reported that residents in these states marry later and are more educated than residents in other states. Statistics showed that the states with the lowest divorce rates included New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, and North Dakota. The divorce rate in these states averaged six or seven per 1,000 people as opposed to 31 states where divorces averaged more than 10 per 1,000 residents.

Divorce and other disputes concerning family members are among the most difficult legal situations to experience. The issues involved are intensely personal and often emotionally charged; their resolutions will likely impact those involved for many years to come. An understanding of all the ramifications of your decisions regarding these issues is vital if you wish to retain control over what will ensue. That is why it is important to have the legal counsel of an attorney who is experienced in divorce and family law in your state.
