Car accidents can happen at any moment and have the potential to be fatal.

A UCLA wide receiver was killed in an auto accident on Sunday, September 8, around 1:27 a.m. Nick Pasquale was a 20 year old football player for UCLA. He was hit as a pedestrian by a vehicle in San Clemente while walking in a residential neighborhood and died early on Sunday morning, according to the Orange County Coroner’s office.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has said that the investigation into the incident is ongoing but that they have interviewed the driver but at this point no arrests have been made. A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department did give some details of the accident, relating that there were two cars driving in tandem, and one of the cars attempted to avoid hitting Pasquale but was unable to. Currently police do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in causing the crash.

Pasquale was a redshirt freshman for the team and a preferred walk-on. He had an all-county career at San Clemente High where he started as a cornerback and as a receiver for both his junior and senior years. His 2011 squad finished as the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division runner-up. Pasquale’s coach at UCLA, Jim Mora, said “This is a tragic loss. Nick was an outstanding young man who had a positive impact on everyone who knew him. He was a great teammate who was loved and respected by his entire team. Our thoughts are with the Pasquale family.”

Jaime Ortiz was the defensive coordinator for the Tritons when Pasquale played on the team and he is now the current coach. Ortiz said, speaking about Pasquale, “He was a stud. He was a hard-nosed kid who gave you everything he had… He was the heart and soul of our team during that time.” Pasquale had visited the campus on Friday night to watch a game and this was when Ortiz last saw him. Ortiz said that Pasquale was a frequent visitor, always wearing his UCLA colors. The coach and player hugged after the game and Ortiz wished him good luck.
