I am Christopher J. Nelson, Attorney at Law. I have been defending Minnesota residents against criminal charges since 1995. I am an experienced and knowledgeable criminal lawyer who works hard to help people who are in trouble. - DUI and DWI

A DUI or DWI is often the first experience that people have with the criminal justice system. I understand that the whole situation can be overwhelming. I believe it is essential that if you have been arrested and charged with drunk driving, you seek legal advice immediately. I have handled thousands of DUI and DWI cases throughout Minnesota, and I know how to act swiftly to protect your rights.

- Domestic Assault

I understand that in most fifth-degree domestic assault situations, spouses or domestic partners simply had an argument that got out of control. They would usually benefit from couples counseling rather than a trip to the police station, but officers have their instructions. Strategies that I use to make a case for dismissal of your charges include—Defense of family members, Self-defense, Questionable credibility of the witnesses, and, A legitimate alibi. I take all domestic assault charges seriously. Even a conviction without jail time will remain on your criminal record, which can cause future problems in everything from employment opportunities to child support assessments.

- Theft Charges

Using my knowledge of the Minneapolis criminal court system, I get many of my clients' theft cases dismissed before trial. If a trial is necessary, I achieve not-guilty verdicts on a regular basis. When a guilty verdict cannot be avoided, I negotiate directly with the prosecution to achieve sentencing recommendations that are fair and tolerable.

Drug laws in Minnesota are stricter than those in many neighboring states. Still, the actual sentences handed down for convictions of drug crimes are variable. For most first-time drug offenses in Minneapolis, I can get your charges dismissed or get your sentence to be greatly reduced from the maximum allowable penalties.
