A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Dreves is licensed in New York State and Washington State as an attorney and in Japan as a Registered Foreign Lawyer (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi), is competent in written and spoken business-level Japanese and can negotiate and review contracts and legal documents and provide advice in both English and Japanese.

We are experienced in working closely with Japanese and other lawyers. We maintain, and utilize of when needed, a broad network of Japanese lawyers and international lawyers and law firms licensed to practice in Japan and other key international jurisdictions. We can also assist clients in engaging and coordinating with such other lawyers and law firms on particular domestic and foreign law issues where special expertise or large staffs are advisable, such as taxation, intellectual property registration matters, and large cross-border securities offerings and M&A transactions. We also provide assistance to individuals on a wide range of personal and business matters.
Mr. Dreves:
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Dreves worked in law firms in Tokyo from 1984 to 1988. He moved to New York in 1988, continuing his representation of Japanese financial institutions. In 1995, he joined the New York office of the leading Japanese long-term credit bank, The Industrial Bank of Japan (now Mizuho), where he spent five years helping to establish its legal department. He joined investment bank Morgan Stanley in 2000 and returned to Tokyo to provide transactional and regulatory coverage for Morgan Stanley Japan’s fixed income structured products, derivatives, foreign exchange and commodities unit, including preparation for their successful supervisory examination.
He joined the Tokyo office of the world’s largest international law firm, Baker & McKenzie in 2002, where as a partner he assisted foreign financial institutions with regulatory and transactional matters in Japan, worked on multi-jurisdictional deals with a US securities element, advised Japanese financial firm
