William C. Head is Georgia’s best-known Criminal and Civil Trial Attorney. He is appellate counsel on over 200 appeals, including over 130 reported appellate decisions (criminal and civil). He has been lead counsel on more than 1,500 contested cases in 33 years of practice.Since 2005, Mr. Head has been handling cases nationally, traveling as far north as Michigan and as far west as California.
Mr. Head has been named to the “SuperLawyers’ list for every year that publication has been released in Georgia. He is also one of only a handful of attorneys to be named to “Best Lawyers in America” from the State of Georgia.
Mr. Head began his education at the University of Georgia, graduating with honors with a degree in history in 1973. He then continued his education at UGA School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1976.
Since June of 2008, a new national attorney rating site Avvo, Inc., has listed Mr. Head’s personal profile as being the 1 attorney in any type practice among its 1.2 million plus listings, based on multiple "rating" criteria.
Mr. Head was one of the original twelve Regents who created the National College for DUI Defense, Inc. (NCDD), in 1995, and previously served as a Regent of the College in the initial three years of the College’s founding, and again from 2000 through 2003. He is Board Certified by the NCDD as a specialist in DUI defense. Mr. Head has authored six books, several chapters of other books, and numerous articles on DUI-related issues and Criminal Trial Practice. His books include 101 Ways to Avoid a Drunk Driving Conviction (©1991 - co-authored with the late Reese Joye) and The Georgia DUI Trial Practice Manual (Thomson-Reuters Publishing [formerly Thomson-West Publishing], (©1996-2009 - starting in 2008 this book is now co-authored by Frank T. Gomez).
In 2007, Mr. Head was the second Editor of The DWI Journal after John Tarantino, and presently serves on the editorial board of The DWI Journal, a monthly DUI attorney trade publications published in Fanwood, NJ.
Mr. Head also holds "Life Member" status in the NACDL, GACDL, and SCACDL. He has successfully completed a 40-hour breath test course and is certified to operate an Intoxilyzer 5000 and owns an Intoxilyzer, Model 5000EN. He has also attended and completed an advanced training course on “Alcohol & Drugs” taught at Lake Tahoe, NV in 1998. Following this training, Mr. Head sponsored two top-level training programs on Forensic Blood and Urine Testing at Emory University (Atlanta) in December 2008 and later at San Diego, CA in May of 2009. Mr. Head is also a NHTSA-certified field sobriety instructor, and previously sponsored the first NHTSA SFST student and SFST instructor training courses for criminal defense attorneys, beginning in 1994.
Mr. Head holds a certificate of successful completion (in 2000) for the Robert F. Borkenstein Course on “Alcohol, Drugs, and Highway Safety: Testing, Research, and Litigation” based out of Indiana University at Bloomington and is a provisional member of the International Association for Chemical Testing (IACT) as well as being a jurisprudential member of the American Academy of Forensic Scientists (AAFS). He is also one of only two DUI defense attorneys to ever present a DUI-related paper at the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS), an international organization dealing with Alcohol and Drug-Related Driving Safety.
