Practice Areas
Practice Areas Description
- Nursing Home Abuse and NeglectAccording to the National Research Council, an estimated 1-2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection, including nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Elder abuse generally falls into one of two categories:
• Abuse: This is the intentional infliction of physical pain or mental anguish on a nursing home resident, causing injury or death, such as assault and battery, unreasonable restraint, knowing supply of improper medication and willfully depriving a resident of food, drink or medicine.
• Neglect: This is careless conduct that results in a nursing home resident suffering injury or death. A nursing home staff fails to provide a reasonable standard of care when it neglects to provide necessary food, drink or medication, or when it fails to provide proper hygiene, bedding and clothing or to properly monitor the resident’s health and condition.
Since establishing the firm of Hughes & Coleman in 1985, co-founding partners J. Marshall Hughes and Lee Coleman have been dedicated to protecting the rights and interests of Kentucky and Tennessee nursing home abuse and neglect victims and the families who care deeply about them.
