Mr. Gonzales' credentials include seven years as a magistrate judge and municipal court judge in Bexar County, eight years as a criminal prosecutor in San Antonio and Houston, and more than 200 trials as a criminal defense lawyer. Before he began his career as a criminal defense lawyer, Joe D. Gonzales served as a criminal prosecutor for 8 years in the District Attorney offices in Houston and San Antonio. From 1998 to 2006, he presided over criminal proceedings as a magistrate judge in San Antonio. In private practice as a trial attorney since 1998, he has handled thousands of cases and more than 200 trials before a judge or jury. All told, he's devoted over 20 years of his life to criminal law.

As an accomplished criminal defense lawyer and trial attorney, Joe D. Gonzales is equally comfortable in state or federal court. He has served on a federal public defender panel to represent criminal defendants charged in the San Antonio division of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, where he's gained considerable experience defending against charges filed by all federal law enforcement agencies.

Practice Areas

Practice Areas Description

- Violent Felonies / Capital Murder / Aggravated Assault

Attorney Joe D. Gonzales uses 20 years of experience to represent adults and juveniles in South Texas facing serious felony charges. He brings valuable insight as a former prosecutor in the San Antonio and Houston District Attorney's Offices and as a former Magistrate Judge in Bexar County. Contact Joe D. Gonzales & Associates for capable defense for any violent crime charges, including: murder (including capital murder), manslaughter/vehicular manslaughter, aggravated assault/repeat domestic assault, kidnapping/aggravated kidnapping, robbery/aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, sexual assault and child sex crimes,

- Sexual Assault

Mr. Gonzales represents clients charged with all types of misdemeanor and felony sexual assault charges, including: all degrees of sexual assault and rape, aggravated sexual assault of a child, prostitution and solicitation of a prostitute, criminal solicitation of a child, sexting, indecent exposure and indecent contact with a child. Joe Gonzales has more than two decades of experience working alongside prosecutors and judges. His focus is to always find a way to have felony sexual offenses reduced to a misdemeanor if possible. Often, there may be a special probation program available that will allow you to avoid jail upon successful completion. Keeping you off the Texas Sex Offender Registry is always a primary goal.

- Drug Crimes

The law firm of Joe D. Gonzales & Associates in San Antonio, Texas, represents drug crime defendants throughout South Central Texas and statewide. Contact the law firm immediately to discuss your arrest for any state or federal drug dealing or possession charges, such as: possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, meth, heroin, Ecstasy, or other controlled substances, unauthorized possession of prescription drugs, intent to distribute, drug trafficking/conspiracy, cultivation or manufacturing of drugs and juvenile drug offenses.

- Drunk Driving / DWI

Joe D. Gonzales offers 20 years of experience in DWI cases. From insights as a former county prosecutor and nine years in private practice, he knows how to investigate, negotiate, and defend charges of driving while intoxicated. Until 2006, Mr. Gonzales also served as a Magistrate Judge, and knows the likely sentences you face upon conviction for alcohol-related offenses, such as: first offense DWI/DUI, repeat offender drunk driving, violation of Texas implied consent laws (refusing a breathalyzer test), intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter.

- Juvenile Crimes

Before private practice, Joe D. Gonzales served as a chief prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney's Office, where he handled only serious juvenile crimes such as: murder and robbery, sexual assault and statutory rape, aggravated sexual assault on a child/indecency with a child, drive-by shootings and home invasions, auto theft and burglary and felony drug crimes (possession, trafficking). There are three potential outcomes for serious crimes: incarceration by the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) to a juvenile detention facility until age 21; determinate sentencing—sent to the TYC until age 18, at which time the court decides if a longer sentence is needed; and certified to stand trial as an adult (adult prison sentence if convicted).

- Probation Violation and Parole Violation

If you violated terms of probation for a misdemeanor offense (conviction or deferred adjudication), a judge can revoke your probation and order you to serve the original stayed sentence—or impose a harsher one. A warrant for your arrest may be issued for: failing to report to a probation officer, failing a urine analysis drug test ("dirty UA"), failing to make restitution or get court-ordered treatment and committing a new crime during the probationary period. A Motion to Revoke Parole is similar to a probation violation, with two key differences: you cannot bond out of a parole warrant. The "blue warrant" requires you to sit in jail until the MTR hearing. Mr. Gonzales works to get the earliest court date possible; and your case is argued before an administrative hearing officer, not a judge.

- White Collar Crimes

Joe D. Gonzales and his firm can thoroughly investigate your case to determine the best way in which to seek a resolution to the charges you are facing. Many different types of cases fall under the heading of white collar crime, including: embezzlement, mortgage fraud, check fraud, Internet fraud, computer and Internet crimes, identity theft, credit card fraud, Ponzi scheme, conspiracy, money laundering and tax fraud. White collar crime and criminal fraud charges can have an effect on your entire life.
