Practice Areas Description

- Criminal Defense

Whether you have been charged with drunk driving, drug crimes, assault, or another criminal charge, you have the right to fair representation under the law. As a former prosecutor for the State of Texas, I offer a unique perspective on how the other side will approach the charges against you. I use that experience and in-depth knowledge to benefit you.

- DUI/DWI

As a DWI/DUI attorney and former state prosecutor, I recognize the severity of a drunk driving arrest, whether it be for misdemeanor DWI/DUI, felony intoxication assault, or felony intoxication manslaughter. I prosecuted all of these types of cases. Because I know how to put these cases together, I also know how to take them apart. Without proper representation in these cases, you could immediately lose your license, be wrongly convicted, be subjected to expensive D.P.S. imposed surcharges, and suffer a drastic increase in your automobile insurance for years to come.

- Drug Crime

If you have been charged with a drug offense, you require aggressive criminal defense and thorough knowledge of the law from your attorney. At the Law Office of John L. Venza Jr. in Sugar Land, Texas, my background as a former Assistant District Attorney has provided me a first-hand account of how the State will prepare its drug crime accusation against you.

- Theft

My passion for criminal defense has involved taking very deliberate and detailed steps in gaining both experience and knowledge to become a criminal defense attorney. While serving as a law clerk, I co-authored articles on white collar theft. As a state prosecutor, I prosecuted multiple types of theft cases. That hands-on and academic experience enables me to give you a thorough and relentless theft defense.

- Organized Crime

You don't have to be a member of an infamous gang to be charged with organized crime in Texas. You don't even have to know the identities of the other participants in the alleged crime. All that is required for the state to charge you with organized crime is evidence that three or more people have collaborated in carrying out a criminal activity.

- Assault

As the senior prosecutor of a felony District Court in the State of Texas, much of my caseload involved prosecution of violent crimes. From simple assault to murder, I gained experience in those areas and knowledge as to how violent crimes are investigated and prosecuted. Not only do I have the hands-on experience that your violent crime charge requires, but my incisive knowledge in the defenses to these charges as been recognized by my peers statewide.

- Family Violence and Domestic Abuse

All marriages and dating relationships have difficult periods. Sometimes an argument is just an argument. However, when the police show up and arrest you on family violence charges, lives and reputations can be ruined and your civil rights put in jeopardy. For example, the right to own and carry a gun can be affected. Obtaining immediate legal representation from a skilled criminal defense attorney can help keep a bad situation from getting worse.

- Sex Crimes

Few events in life are more damaging than a sexual assault accusation. A conviction for a sex crime seriously impacts your life far beyond time served. In addition to ruining your reputation and that of your family, you may be subject to lifetime registration as a sex offender, resulting in great difficulty finding jobs or a home, and feeling like an outcast.

- Police Defense

When you are charged with a crime against the police, you are in an especially difficult situation. The district attorney's office is often sympathetic to the police officer and developing an effective defense will be an uphill battle.

- Bribery

Bribery and corruption charges involve a serious violation of public trust. As such, they are scrutinized by both prosecutors and the media. If you are charged with bribery or corruption charges, you will need a lawyer who can help you weather the storm whether it comes from the district attorney or the media.

- Bail Reduction

Bail reduction and bail denial cases move at accelerated pace. As your lawyer, my goal is to get your bail set or reduced as quickly as possible and get you out of custody. I have a track record of successfully doing that for my clients. Sometimes I am able to bail out my clients on the same day that I am hired to represent them.

- Weapons Charges

Texas is a haven for many types of illegal weapons. Increasingly, I have seen a statewide crackdown on the possession and transport of those weapons. If you are charged with a weapons offense in Texas, you will need an experienced and tenacious lawyer to represent you and protect your rights.

- Murder

A murder charge is as serious as it gets. If you are charged with murder in Texas, you will almost certainly have to go to trial in order to have any realistic chance of avoiding serious time in prison .At the Law Office of John L. Venza Jr., I provide clients with aggressive defense representation of all types of murder charges, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and capital murder. As a former prosecutor for the state of Texas, I pride myself on offering a unique perspective on how the other side will approach murder charges against you. I am dedicated to protecting your rights throughout the entirety of your case.

- Child Endangerment Defense

Many parents do not think it is a crime to take the kids away from an ex spouse for a few days in violation of a divorce order. In fact, it is the serious crime of kidnapping, which can have a major impact on the rest of your life.

- Probation

Sometimes people need more than just a second chance. If the State of Texas is trying to revoke your probation, you deserve a lawyer who has handled hundreds of cases just like yours and who knows what to do to keep you from going to jail or prison. When the State of Texas files a Motion to Revoke Probation (also called a Motion to Revoke Community Supervision) or a Motion to Adjudicate Guilt in a deferred adjudication case and your judge signs that motion, a warrant will issue for your arrest. You may or may not be entitled to bail, depending on your case. And provided you do bond out, you should know that by going on probation or deferred adjudication, you have waived several rights, including your right to a trial by jury.

- Robbery

If you have been charged with Robbery in Texas, you are charged with a very serious offense for which you could be sent to prison for up to 20 years. You will need a lawyer who is well versed in defenses to Robbery charges and one who has been successful in having Robbery charges reduced to less serious offenses. In many cases, I have been able to reduce felony Robbery charges down to the misdemeanor charge of theft.

- Forgery

Forgery is a serious crime in Texas and prosecutors aggressively pursue convictions in these cases. If you are convicted of forgery, prospective employers are going to view you as a thief. As a result, it's very important to hire a lawyer who has a proven record of preventing his clients from being convicted of forgery charges.

- Credit Card Fraud

Like forgery and other theft and property offenses, credit and debit card crimes are considered "crimes of moral turpitude." In other words, if you are convicted you will be viewed as a dishonest person by prospective employers, police officers and others who can access your criminal record. As a result, a conviction of a credit or debit card crime can prevent you from doing a lot of things for the rest of your life.

- Money Laundering

In Texas, money laundering is often charged in connection with other crimes such as manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance. Money laundering is a very serious crime that can lead to can also lead to asset forfeiture. If you are charged with money laundering, you will need a lawyer who has the experience necessary to protect your property and your freedom.
