Practice Areas Description
- AdoptionsAdoptions can be quite complex from a legal standpoint. There are no standardized forms as in a divorce, only the statutes to guide us. The relinquishment of a parental right must be done carefully to comply with Washington Law. Complications sometimes arise during the adoption process. Issues such as service of process, home investigation, and heritage, can all be stumbling blocks to a smooth adoption .
- Alimony
Spousal support can also be known by the terms "alimony" or "maintenance". For the purposes of this article, it will be referred to as maintenance. Maintenance usually is brought into play when a person files for a dissolution of marriage or legal separation. There are many factors that are considered by the court before granting maintenance to the party requesting it.
- Divorce
I am often told that this is an "Easy Divorce" and therefore it will be quicker, and less expensive. This is sometimes true, but more often the difficulty of a divorce case rests on two factors, both of which can be unrelated to the litigant's perception of difficulty. These factors are: 1) are the parties in complete agreement, and/or 2) do the parties have complicating factors such as children, criminal histories, or major assets to argue over.
- Child Support
Washington child support is typically modifiable every two years, or sooner in some cases upon an unanticipated significant change of financial circumstances. If your two years are up, you may wish to have DCS run an administrative change to the child support. There is typically no charge to you from DCS (although of course your support could go up or down).
