Most people who are fully functional change their body position every three or four minutes. We shift our legs, move our arms and hands. When we do that, we are off-loading pressure from one part of our body to another. However, people who are bound to their beds and do not have the strength or cognitive awareness to do that must have someone else move them.

• Malnutrition and dehydration
Bodies need fuel to operate properly. Just like cars don't work without gas or fuel, when a body is chronically malnourished or dehydrated, it cannot survive. Unfortunately, because some people who are in nursing homes can't feed themselves, malnutrition and dehydration are increasing problems in nursing homes.

• Choking to death
Choking deaths also occur when the dining room is inadequately staffed, and no one on staff notices that the resident is choking until it is too late. Although the standard of care requires nursing homes to have at least one nurse who is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), that individual may not be in the dining room when the individual chokes. Because they are worried about upsetting the other residents, many nursing homes do not perform CPR in the dining room. Instead, they wheel the choking patient back to his or her room before performing the Heimlich maneuver or beginning CPR.
