In July of 2000, after being an associate at the firm since 1989, attorney John C. Colwell became the owner of our firm. Since that time, we have become the first and largest filer of electronic consumer bankruptcies in San Diego County bankruptcy courts. Chapter 13 bankruptcy lets you create a debt repayment plan to pay off your debts over a 36 to 60 month period. This is especially helpful when you have debts than cannot be discharged through chapter 7 bankruptcy like: Home mortgage, Car loans, Student loans, Child support, Alimony (spousal support), and, Taxes. This kind of bankruptcy also has more flexibility than chapter 7. As long as you keep up with your monthly plan payments, you typically do not have to repay the full amounts of your debt. Once your plan ends, you can begin to rebuild your credit score. Your income can be higher than your monthly debts.
