Practice Areas
Practice Areas Description
Our practice includes:- Child Support
Child support and child custody are often among the most contentious issues in any divorce or family law matter. At our firm, we explain child support laws and help you determine what your child support expectation should be under Texas law. We can also help you modify your original child support judgment when things change in your life. We handle the following matters: Family Law; Child custody and child visitation rights; Texas child support calculations; Enforcing child support payments; Judgment modifications; Military family law child support; Paternity disputes and actions; and Terminating parental rights.
- Custody and Visitation
Our firm knows that child custody and visitation schedule decisions are some of the most important aspects of divorce for individuals with children. There are a number of factors the court takes into consideration when determining custody. One of the most important factors is which parent is the primary care giver. The other factors that will be considered are the preference of the child, the stability of the parent, work schedules, education and employment background. In applying for custody, it's important to document the level of your involvement with your children and why you can provide the best environment for them. If you need to move out of state or need to modify your existing child custody or visitation arrangement, we can help you file a post-divorce modification as well.
- Divorce
If you need high quality divorce representation, our firm handles: Child custody and visitation rights; Child support issues; Military divorce, division of military retirement; Alimony, spousal support; Marital property division; Complex property and family business valuation; Retirement accounts, pensions division; Deferred compensation; Legal separations, annulments; and Real estate asset division. Attorney Pamela Thompson, and our team of legal professionals, understands that divorce is an emotional decision that often requires grieving and worry about what a new future will bring. We never forget that every divorce proceeding is unique to each client that walks through our doors. When you call with a question or concern, we respond quickly and honestly. When you need help making a decision, we will fully explain all of your legal options.
- Military Divorce
Military members or their spouses need to understand how retirement funds and eligibility for health benefits are handled in military divorces. The calculations that are involved when determining the division of any service member's (active duty, reservist or retired) retirement funds can be extremely complicated. We handle the all aspects of military divorce including: Child custody issues; Child support / spousal support; Property division; Division of retirement benefits; Division of thrift saving plans; Addressing issues when a spouse is deployed; and Calculating taxable and non-taxable military income. We have helped countless military service members, as well as their spouse, in divorces, child custody cases, and other family law matters. Regardless of whether you are facing divorce, are about to be deployed, or need legal representation on a family law matter while you are overseas, we have the resources and knowledge needed to help you.
- Division of Marital Assets
Determining divorce assets involves complex issues associated with retirement funds, investments, real property, and closely held businesses. We protect our client's financial interests through careful financial analysis of property holdings and investment portfolios. At the Law Offices of Pamela S. Thompson, our attorneys work closely with forensic accountants, certified business evaluators, and tax experts in divorce cases. Our primary objective is protecting our client's financial interests should his or her spouse attempt to overestimate marital assets, a closely held business' value, or investment holdings.
- Post-Divorce Modifications
The only way to lawfully change or deviate from the terms of your divorce settlement is through a post-divorce or other prior order modification. If you don't legally modify the terms of your divorce settlement, you can be held in contempt and may face fines, pay attorney fees, and jail time. Depending on the circumstances involved, your custody or visitation rights could be impacted as well. At the Law Offices of Pamela S. Thompson, our attorneys prepare and file modifications for individuals who wish to increase or decrease the child support obligation. Our office prepares post-divorce modifications in regard to the following: Child support payments; Child custody arrangements; and Visitation times and schedules.
- Paternity Claims and Disputes
We represent fathers and mothers seeking relief from the courts to establish parental rights for the purpose of: Child custody; Child support enforcement; Establishing visitation, child contact and access rights; Establish shared parental responsibility contact; Paternity fraud; Establishing paternity, paternity testing; and Terminating parental rights. If you are involved in a dispute over a paternity issue, we urge you to remember that at the heart of every paternity case there is a child involved.
- Collaborative Law
As certified mediators, we help reduce the stress and cost of divorce in all of these family law areas: Child custody and visitation issues; Child support issues; Military divorce, division of military retirement pay and benefits; Marriage property division; and Alimony, spousal support. Whether your pending divorce will be relatively simple or includes complex estate valuation and property division, the collaborative law process will help save you time, emotional energy, and money. At the beginning of the process you will be asked to sign on to a non-binding agreement to meet with your spouse's attorney to mediate a settlement that is fair to everyone involved. If a reasonable settlement cannot be reached after a series of mediation sessions, you retain the option of filing for litigation through the courts.
- Adoptions
Since opening the doors of the Law Offices of Pamela S. Thompson in 1993, we have found that adoption is an area of Texas family law that is particularly satisfying. Along with our staff of legal and client service professionals, attorney Pamela Thompson enjoys helping you welcome new family members through the adoption process. We are not an adoption agency. We provide comprehensive legal services for infant adoptions, step-child adoptions, and adoption by grandparents and extended family members. Whatever your adoptions needs may be, we look forward to helping you through the satisfying and happy process.
- Probate and Wills
Establishing a will to protect your family from taxes and probate court at the time of your death is one of the most important responsibilities of a parent. We provide simple probate and estate planning services to help our family law clients protect their financial resources. We can help you establish a simple will and testament, a living will, health care directives, or a medical power of attorney and a financial power of attorney. Failure to leave a will can complicate the probate process and may lead to conflicts among your survivors, especially if you've been married more than once. Our attorneys can also evaluate your financial situation and identify other estate planning tools that can reduce your estate tax and help you secure your family's financial future.
