Practice Areas Description

-Criminal Defense

If you or someone you love has been arrested for a crime or cited for a traffic offense in Knoxville or the surrounding communities of East Tennessee, you are likely concerned about what will happen next and what consequences might be coming. You need an experienced criminal law attorney who will look out for your best interests and will protect your rights.

-Juvenile Crimes

When a person under 18 years of age commits a crime in the state of Tennessee, they are typically charged as a juvenile and tried in juvenile court. Juvenile offenses include all types of crimes, including traffic offenses, drug charges, sex offenses, and other serious felonies like sexual assault and murder. Although juveniles are subjected to a different judicial system than adults, they can still face serious penalties and costly consequences that could potentially affect their future.

-DUI Defense

In order for a DUI charge to hold up in court, a number of factors must be taken into consideration: did the officer have reasonable suspicion to stop a driver? Did he conduct a field sobriety test properly? Did he have probable cause to arrest you? Are the breathalyzer or blood test results reliable? At the law office of Patrick L. Looper, Attorney at Law, we identify and expose mistakes and unreliable forensic evidence in DUI arrests that require the charges be dropped against you. In cases where the evidence is not in question, we may be able to have the charges or sentence against you reduced to help you avoid losing your license or going to jail.

-Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment and discrimination are prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Unequal pay or unequal treatment along gender or racial lines may violate Title VII. Additionally, employers can be held financially liable in cases of sexual harassment involving offers of a promotion or job in exchange for sexual favors, unwanted touching, or sexually suggestive comments. In most cases involving sexual harassment or discrimination, a pattern of behavior emerges in regard to hirings, firings, and complaints to Human Resources personnel.

-Family Law

When you are faced with difficult family law challenges, you need to hire an experienced attorney who can accurately assess your situation and help you to make decisions that are in the best interest of you and you family. In a divorce, custody matter, adoption or other family law issue that is likely to have a profound impact on the rest of your life, it is important to make responsible choices that will protect you now and in the future.

-Car Accident

If you have been injured in a car, truck, motorcycle or other motor vehicle accident in Knoxville or on the roads and highways that run across East Tennessee, you need the representation of an experienced personal injury and wrongful death attorney. Obtaining compensation for your medical treatment, your lost wages and your pain and suffering is important and insurance companies are not always on your side.

-Workers' Compensation

If you have been injured on the job, you may have questions about your rights to workers' compensation benefits, sometimes referred to as workman's comp. You may be having difficulty paying for medical expenses, lost wages and rehabilitation in addition to regular expenses such as house and car payments. Knowing how the workers' compensation process works is important to successfully obtain the recovery that you need.

-Civil Rights

Employers, police departments, and governing authorities can be held liable for civil rights violations. In regard to the workplace, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides certain protections for different classes of people in the workplace. In cases involving property rights and the actions of governing authorities, failure to follow proper procedures through public hearings and petitions can also involve violations of civil rights. When police use excessive force, deny a suspect his constitutional rights, or try to use the "color of law" to deny someone the exercise of his rights, they may be liable for civil rights violations.

-Wrongful Death

Negligent car drivers, manufacturers, doctors, employers, and property owners can be held liable for fatal accidents they cause through safety violations, accidents, or a reckless indifference to the well-being of others. Since it's not uncommon for those responsible for causing a fatal accident to try and shift the blame elsewhere, it's important to investigate the cause of fatal accidents and gather eyewitness testimony.
