Law Firm Overview

Pfeffer & Associates have successfully counseled and represented thousands of injured employees throughout the state for more than two decades. We represent workers injured both physically and psychologically in work-related accidents. We also assist employees financially and emotionally injured by their employer's unlawful discriminatory and retaliatory acts and practices.

A focal point of the attorneys at Pfeffer & Associates is the ongoing battle to obtain justice for the injured worker, beyond the meager benefits provided by workers compensation in Florida. Florida and federal laws are designed to guarantee workers important rights:

To claim workers compensation under the terms of state law
To equal employment opportunity
To take a leave of absence
To be free of retaliation for claiming workers comp benefits

Led by veteran trial lawyer Louis P. Pfeffer—who developed his work ethic growing up in a family of western Pennsylvania coal miners—the firm regularly represents powerless, injured, and aggrieved employees against powerful employers and their insurance companies. Mr. Pfeffer has been honored with the prestigious AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review RatingSM by Martindale-Hubbell®, the highest rating available for both professional competence and ethical integrity

The majority of our firm's clients are referrals from other lawyers, former clients, and current clients. Many of our employment and discrimination claims originate with clients who first retained Louis P. Pfeffer, P.A. to assist them in their workers compensation claims. Other clients come to the firm because of our long experience in employment-related practice areas.

Practice Areas

Practice Areas Description

The dedicated lawyers of Pfeffer & Associates assist workers in many difficult legal situations in Florida. Our focus is on:

- Workers Compensation

Getting injured at work is always unfortunate. Sustaining the injury in Florida means you are even less fortunate, because Florida has one of the weakest workers compensation systems in the country, providing meager support even when you meet the unreasonably high standards of proof to qualify for benefits. And, if you were injured after October, 2003—when the system became even more restrictive—you may feel downright cursed. It is our job at Louis P. Pfeffer, P.A. to help you navigate this difficult system.

- Employment Law

The relationship between an employer and an employee in Florida is governed by state contract law and certain Florida and federal laws that govern the employment relationship. Most Floridians are employed under Florida's employment at-will rule.

- Retaliation

An employer who retaliates against an injured worker for filing a claim or seeking an attorney can be sued in civil court for money damages for lost past and future wages, pain and suffering, emotional distress damages, and punitive damages.

- Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

In 1993, Congress—in an attempt to balance the demands of the workplace and the demands of family life—passed the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This act allows employees under certain conditions to take a short leave of absence and at the end of the absence to have their job back.

- Sexual Harassment

Workplace harassment, including sexually offensive jokes or photos or unwanted sexual advances, is illegal. If you are subjected to misconduct that makes you uncomfortable, your employer may be held liable in a sexual harassment claim.

- Disability Discrimination

Until relatively recently, disabled people were routinely—and legally—subjected to discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination based on disability was legal and disabled workers or would-be workers had no recourse under the law. That was the situation until the U.S. Congress passed two landmark acts—the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Americans with Disability Act Ammendments Act—to extend the protections of anti-discrimination law to people with disabilities.
