Law Firm Overview
Since its creation in 1965, Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano Abogados introduced to Peru a novel legal practice that offers advice through experts covering all areas of law, operating on the basis of a structure built on teamwork, responsiveness and proactivity to meet our clients' needs. Fully identified with the Firm, our lawyers base their work in a spirit of true solidarity and unsurpassed commitment towards clients and community services.Daily coordination meetings of all members of the Firm and the designation of an attorney responsible for the relationship with each client allow us to know our clients and their businesses in depth, ensure excellence in service, anticipate and meet our clients' needs and provide cost effective services, while maintaining confidentiality all along.
Our corporate, finance and M&A areas are renown as leading in Peru. From participating in 5 of the 10 largest and most significant Peruvian M&A deals in 2005 to advising IDB and CAF in the project financing of the gas and liquid pipelines from the Camisea field –named "Latin America Oil & Gas Deal of the Year" by Euromoney–, we are considered as the number one Firm in the field by prestigious publications. For instance, in its 2006 yearbook International Financial Law Review places Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano as tier 1 recommended for banking and capital markets, M&A and project finance, "the only one to be ranked in the top tier in each category – which reflects the strength in depth of its considerable team".
Mining is also a strong practice area of our Firm, as we provide legal assistance to most of the largest and most important foreign and local mining companies in the country. In 2005 our Firm was lead counsel in Peru in the US$443 million equity financing and subsequent US$450 million project financing for the expansion of the Cerro Verde copper mine.
Our tax practice, led by founding partner Humberto Medrano, a highly regarded practitioner both locally and internationally –he was considered the leading tax attorney in Peru by Who's Who–, is acknowledged as one of the best in the country for its handling of representative tax cases and its tax planning expertise.
Unlike many of the other top firms in the country, Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano also stands out for its litigation and dispute resolution practices, having successfully acted as counsel in landmark cases such as the defense against the expropriation of the banking industry and the so-called "beer war" to take control of the largest local beer producer.
Other practice areas in the Firm are energy, telecom and regulatory practice, intellectual property, labour and employment, aviation, insolvency and bankruptcy, and insurance, among others, and complete Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano's all around capabilities.
The 2005 edition of "Latin Lawyer 250: Latin America's leading business law firms" described Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano Abogados as an "established blue-chip player blending tradition and modernity with a strong and established client list, a very strong international profile and impressive strength in depth". Likewise, "Chambers Global: The World Leading Lawyers" has referred to our Firm as "the clear market front runner" and indicated that "clients and peers alike agree that this is the best firm in Peru for corporate work". In 2005 Chambers & Partners shortlisted us for "Law Firm of the Year" in the South America category of the Chambers Global Awards.
