Practice Areas
Additional Practice Areas: Misdemeanors, Felonies, Criminal Threats, Kidnapping, Child Abduction, Property Crime, Probation Violations
Practice Areas Description
- Federal OffensesCriminal defense lawyer Ron Cordova has successfully represented clients facing federal criminal indictment or charged with federal offenses since 1979. Because the federal system has its own complex rules and process for evidentiary discovery and sentencing, there are strategies unique to federal criminal practice that take years to understand and apply. The stakes are much higher and the sentences are much more severe than at the state level.
- Misdemeanor and Felonies
A felony is defined under California law as any criminal offense for which the possible punishment upon a conviction is more than one year in the state prison or death. If you are under investigation for a felony crime or have been charged, the criminal justice system will seem complex, confusing and frightening. Understanding the process will help you cope with events over the coming weeks and months.
- Domestic Violence
Domestic violence and related offenses have been singled out by district attorneys throughout California for special prosecution. Many cases of domestic violence and threatening conduct are prosecuted as felonies and the matters are rarely dismissed — even when the alleged victim wishes to drop charges. When police are called to the scene of a domestic disturbance in Orange County and other Southern California communities, an arrest is often automatic.
- DUI Defense
Attorney Ron Cordova has been representing drivers charged with DUI in Orange County and throughout Southern California for more than three decades. Before entering private practice as a criminal defense attorney in 1979, Ron served as a deputy district attorney in Orange County for four years, prosecuting hundreds of DUI cases. As an experienced Irvine DUI defense lawyer, Ron Cordova understands the technical issues and employs strategies that produce the best possible result for his clients.
- Kidnapping and Child Abduction
Most child abduction charges are brought against frustrated non-custodial parents who do not return their children following a scheduled visitation. But the charges can work both ways in California. If a custodial parent does not have the child available for pick up or drop off at a scheduled visitation for the non-custodial parent, the custodial parent may be charged with child abduction. When a child abduction case involves transporting the child across state lines, a federal charge for kidnapping may be preferred against the abductor.
- Murder and Manslaughter
Ron Cordova represents clients charged with the most serious felonies of murder and manslaughter. There are several different offenses that fall under the umbrella of criminal homicide, from involuntary manslaughter to first degree murder. An effective legal defense involves more than just an examination of the facts on the surface. The primary factor in determining guilt is whether there was intent to commit the act.
- Narcotics Possession
With 32 years of criminal defense experience, Ron Cordova provides a comprehensive range of legal services to individuals in Orange County and throughout Southern California. Ron has the experience and skills successfully to represent clients accused of misdemeanor or felony drug offenses in state and federal courts.
- Rape Defense
California has some of the most severe penalties in the nation for sex offenses. A conviction of a felony offense such as rape or sexual assault can result in many years in prison and mandatory registration on the California sex offender registry. Many sex offenses such as statutory rape, solicitation and prostitution do not require a non-consenting victim. Conviction of any sex offense can be devastating and life-altering.
- Property Crime
If you have been charged with theft or other property crime, it may seem as if the police and prosecutors are holding all the cards. Like most states, California has eliminated many of the distinctions between theft charges. Theft offenses may be felonies or misdemeanors, depending upon the amount of property involved, but any conviction can still lead a future employer to conclude that you cannot be trusted with company money or property.
- Probation Violation
Probation is taken seriously by the courts. It is not simply a slap on the wrist; it is a sentence handed down as punishment for a conviction of a criminal offense. A person convicted of a crime may be placed on probation after serving some jail time or in lieu of serving any time at all. Probation comes with many conditions attached and a probation violation often results in a term of incarceration.
