Law Firm Overview
Siegel, Barnett & Schutz, L.L.P. is one of the largest and oldest law firms in South Dakota, with offices in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls. We are a general practice, full service law firm. Our attorneys have experience and expertise covering a broad spectrum of legal matters. We are committed to providing skilled, high quality representation to all our clients. Our history dates back to 1918, when the firm was founded by L.T. Van Slyke and Hugh Agor. Stan Siegel and Joe Barnett Joined the firm in the 1950's, followed by Ray Schutz in 1963. These founding partners built a reputation as preeminent trial lawyers, while also providing general legal services of the highest quality.
Today our lawyers handle civil and criminal litigation and appeals at all levels in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals. While a major portion of our practice is devoted to defending cases for insurance companies and corporations, we also have a long tradition of representing individuals in plaintiff's personal injury, wrongful death, workers' compensation and other cases. We have been successful in recovering some of the largest verdicts and settlements in the region.
We also provide legal counsel to a wide variety of local, regional and national businesses, financial institutions, health care providers, non-profit corporations and public entities. Although prepared to be vigorous advocates, the firm takes pride in counseling dispute prevention and alternative dispute resolution. We offer services to individuals and business concerns in the areas of business and estate planning, probate, real estate, contracts, employment issues and domestic relations among others. We handle matters throughout South Dakota and North Dakota, and frequently associate with resident attorneys to handle matters in other states.
Our members have a long history of service to their profession, community, and state. Our members have been actively involved in local, state and national legal organizations, including the leadership of the State Bar. We also serve as leaders, board members or volunteers in various civic, service, educational, governmental, and church organizations and activities.
