Practice Areas Description

Steven H. Mevorah & Associates, P.C. offers legal representation and services in the following area of law:

Family Law

- Divorce

Our divorce attorneys provide legal representation to divorce clients. Our attorneys represent clients in the legal issues that affect them, their children, and their futures the most. We are successful in representing our clients, and although about 95 percent of our divorce cases settle out of court, we will represent your rights in a trial aggressively. We are detail-oriented and aggressive to ensure you receive what you are entitled to under the law.

- Property and Asset Division

Dividing marital assets can be a complicated legal process, and it is important to have quality legal representation. Our property division attorneys understand the complicated process of dividing property and assets. We are able to uncover assets that your spouse may be hiding. This occurs most often when an individual is self-employed. Because it may be impossible to modify the financial terms of the settlement agreement, it is very important to have complete financial information for both spouses. Important factors for determining child support payments are your future income and your spouse’s future income, assets, and debts.

- Child Support

There are many real and hypothetical financial factors that are used to determine the amount of child support. Child support payment amounts are usually based on income, a projection of future income, and the quality of life a child would have if the parents did not divorce. Depending on what side you are on, you may believe the amount is too much or too little. Our attorneys also represent clients with modifications to child support payments and paternity issues. Modification of child support is often caused by a change in circumstance of one of the parents. These are issues that may have an impact on the child support your children are receiving.

- Child Custody

Child custody questions are often the most emotional issues you will have to deal with when you are going through a divorce. We aggressively represent our clients with all child custody matters. We understand how important your children are to you, and we work hard to ensure that their interests are always at the forefront. Our child custody lawyers provide legal services that work to achieve the best results for you and your children.

- Post-Decree Modification

Divorce decrees are based on material conditions such as income, ability to earn future income, and geographic location of the parents if child custody is an issue. When there is a material change in condition, the original divorce decree may be subject to modification. You and your ex-spouse would need to receive court approval of any changes that need to be made to the decree, making it necessary to consult with a post-decree modification attorney. We operate a client-centered law firm. Our attorneys are approachable and friendly, and we offer extended office hours to accommodate your schedule. Many of our clients are parents with active children, full-time jobs, and many commitments. Our commitment to our clients is to offer quality services and obtain the results they want.

- Adoption

Deciding to adopt a child can be an exciting and confusing time. The paperwork and process are time-consuming and sometimes frustrating. If you are a stepparent who is interested in adopting your spouse's children, the process is often not as time-consuming. Our Chicago, Illinois, adoption attorneys assist clients with the adoption process. Our team of attorneys has more than 100 years of combined experience and skills to ensure that the adoption process is completed in a timely and efficient manner.

- Paternity

We are approachable, accommodating, and efficient. Our family law attorneys are committed to providing clients with quality legal representation. Issues involving children can be difficult. Our paternity attorneys have more than 100 years of combined experience. Our skill; passion; and quality, client-centered services will help you with your paternity issue.

- Dissolution of Arranged Marriage

Most arranged marriages begin in a very different manner from a traditional Westernized marriage. The issues that bring about the end of the marriages are similar. Our divorce attorneys are well equipped to handle the cultural and legal aspects of the dissolution of an arranged marriage. Even if you were married in another country, such as India, and now call Chicago your home, Illinois divorce law still applies.

- Prenuptial / Post-Nuptial Agreements

Pre-nuptial agreement: Couples who marry later in life and have established sizable property and assets may consider this an option to protect their children from a prior marriage. Often, pre-nuptials are also used to protect inheritances.
Post-nuptial agreement: Often an option after a problem arises in a marriage, post-nuptials, like pre-nuptials, apply to property, assets, and sometimes alimony. Issues involving children, such as child support and child custody, are not covered.
