Ms. Karson represents current and former employees and "independent contractors" who have not been paid their full salary or have been laid off, let go, demoted or forced to quit their jobs after having complained to their managers of being sexually harassed by unwanted sexual contact or advances, unwelcome and pestering compliments, calls, emails, or invitations, or discriminated against because of their accent, color of skin, country of birth, religion or religious practices, sexuality, having a contagious disease or known disability, having complained about a dangerous or unlawful situation at their work, or for other unlawful reasons.
Ms. Karson also represents employers in relation to frivolous claims filed by their current or former employees, as well as other employment-related matters, such as conducting workplace investigations, drafting employment-related policies and agreements, and conducting workplace audits.
A growing area of Ms. Karson's practice is immigration law. In this regard, she extends her services to individuals in the following circumstances:
• Green card holders who have been placed in removal proceedings because they remained outside the United States for six months or longer without permission
• Green card holders who have been placed in removal/deportation proceedings for having violated the law
• Individuals who intend to apply for asylum in the United States because they fear being harassed, tortured, persecuted, or imprisoned in the country of their last residence because of their race, ethnicity, religion, political belief and practices, disability, a known contagious illness, membership in a particular social group, or because of being gay or lesbian
• Eligible individuals who intend to apply for a green card or to have the condition on their green cards lifted
• Individuals who obtained a conditional green card through their spouse but can not remain married to their spouse because of sexual, physical, or verbal abuse and would like to obtain a permanent green card
• Eligible individuals who would like to apply for U.S. citizenship
• Eligible individuals who would like to legally travel to the United States through a family petition filed on their behalf by their parent, child, brother, or sister
• Eligible individuals who would like to travel to the United States to marry a U.S. citizen, or to work or study or invest here

- Immigration
Maryam has considerable experience in immigration law, such as applications related to requests for naturalization, permanent residency, immigrant visas and a variety of nonimmigrant visas, withholding of deportation, and asylum. To date, Maryam has assembled over seventy asylum applications, a significantly high percentage of which has been approved.
- Employment Law
Maryam dedicates a significant percentage of her practice to employment law matters. Maryam counsels small and medium-sized businesses throughout the San Jose bay area. On a selective basis, she represents employees with valid claims that their workplace rights have been violated. Maryam represents employees as individuals, and where appropriate, in representative actions. Most recently, she has filed a putative class action against The Hertz Corporation on behalf of some of the company's employees. The complaint states claims pertaining to the company's failure to pay overtime premiums and failure to reimburse the plaintiffs for incurred business expenses.
