Practice Areas Description

The Law Office of Lori Watson offers family law services in the following areas:

- Divorce

The Law Office of Lori Watson can help you navigate through the complexities of your divorce. As your lawyer, Ms. Watson will help you understand your legal options and each one's potential consequences so you can make informed decisions about your future. She is noted for her trustworthy, caring and capable representation of clients at every stage of divorce. As your attorney, Ms. Watson's goal is to support you through the entirety of your divorce and see that you get a fresh start. We handle uncontested divorces — where both parties agree to get divorced and require very little legal counsel — and contested divorces where the divorcing partners disagree about various issues.

- Collaborative Divorce

There are times when going through the court system for your divorce just does not seem like the right approach. Some couples may agree to divorce but want to cooperate to make decisions that will affect them and their children after the divorce. This approach to divorce is called collaborative divorce. At the law office of Lori Watson, we offer collaborative divorce and mediation as an alternative to a more traditional divorce. Benefits of this approach can include: Saving money by avoiding court costs and costly litigation; Having more control over the divorce process; Being able to communicate satisfactorily with your ex spouse once the divorce is over; Greater privacy.

- Temporary Orders

At the Law Office of Lori Watson, we defend and assert our client's financial and legal interests in matters related to temporary orders. The court may issue temporary orders before a divorce is finalized in order to ensure the financial, medical, or housing needs of your children and/or spouse are provided for. Temporary orders may also be used to prevent one spouse from running up debt on credit cards or other lines of credit. If there is concern that one spouse may try and remove the children from the county in which the parties reside, a temporary order may be issued to prevent a parental relocation and ensure each parent has access to their child.

- Child Custody & Visitation

Whether you are in agreement about your divorce and child custody arrangements or you are concerned that child custody may be contested, the Law Office of Lori Watson is ready to help you. Ms. Watson has been providing workable solutions in divorce, child custody and visitation in central Texas since 1996. As an experienced child custody lawyer, she gets to the heart of the issues and clearly communicates the needs and concerns of her clients. Our goal is to access the best solution for you and your children and support you throughout the duration of this process.

- Parenting Plans

At the Law Office of Lori Watson, we work closely with families during the divorce process in developing non-standard parenting plans. As your attorney, Ms. Watson ensures parenting plans take into account a number of factors that the court will want to see addressed before granting its approval. If you and your ex-spouse cannot agree on a parenting plan, the matter will have to be decided by a judge and could result in him or her imposing custody and visitation terms no one finds ideal. Ms. Watson can help you review your situation and determine how best to handle certain financial issues related to child custody and parenting time.

- Child and Spousal Support

In most divorce situations, the two partners are moving from one united household to two separate households. Costs are going to rise, but incomes are going to decrease. Child support and spousal support can become important issues in any divorce. Planning for your future is one of the ways that attorney Lori Watson can help you. Our law office will carefully assess your financial circumstances and help you understand the child support guidelines as they apply to your unique situation. Many parents have no idea of what they are entitled to under the law. We educate them and then help them obtain the financial support that is their right.

- Paternity and Parentage

At the Law Office of Lori Watson, we represent clients in paternity cases, filing all necessary paperwork and following up afterwards in seeking child support or visitation rights. Establishing paternity is essential for collecting child support and gaining parenting time with a child. In the state of Texas, a petition can be filed with the court requesting that a DNA test be ordered for the purposes of determining the paternity of a child. Once the court orders a DNA test, the putative father will be required to have a sample of his DNA tested to see if it matches that of the child in question. Once paternity is confirmed, a mother can request that the father pay child support and a father can demand a possession schedule with his children.

- Enforcement

When the enforcement issue revolves around a spousal or child support matter, there may be a period of time that should elapse before filing an enforcement action. This may be challenging for those who are depending on the monetary support of their former spouse or partner. However, the Law Office of Lori Watson is experienced at handling enforcement matters for clients. Ms. Watson is persistent and capable of finding long-term solutions, even when the person violating the spousal enforcement is self-employed. If your spouse is unemployed or jumping from job to job, it may be hard to garnish wages or enforce a support determination.

- Step Parent Adoptions

It's not uncommon for a stepparent to adopt stepchildren when the biological parent of a child plays little, if any, role in a child's life. In other cases, grandparents may seek to adopt a child. However, before an adoption can be finalized, parental rights must be terminated first. Under Chapter 161 of Title 5 to the Texas Family Code, parental rights can be terminated permanently. Once parental rights are terminated, parents no longer have any legal obligation to a child. As such, once parental rights are terminated the biological parent cannot request visitation or seek custody at a later date; alternatively, the biological parent will not have to pay child support.

- Divorce Modification

When a divorce judgment is issued, it is considered final. However, a judgment cannot predict the future. When a substantial change occurs that affects a child support or child custody arrangement, the law may permit a party to seek modification of the original divorce decree or other court order. This is called a modification. People seek modifications to make sure that their child support and child custody arrangements reflect their changed life circumstances. The Law Office of Lori Watson regularly represents people seeking to modify or enforce a divorce decree.

- Parental Relocations

Whether you are a custodial parent seeking to relocate (or move away) with your child or you are the non-custodial parent who wants to prevent relocation, the Law Office of Lori Watson provides experienced, understanding relocation legal representation. Parent relocations arise for a number of reasons. We handle relocation cases including issues such as when: A parent receives a better job offer in or a job transfer to another state; A parent has been accepted to a university program in another state; A parent is wanting to move in with family members for more support; A parent has remarried and seeks to move to the state of the new spouse.

- Divorce Mediation

The Law Office of Lori Watson offers mediation and collaborative divorce services. When you work with us to mediate your divorce, you are getting the benefit of a lawyer who is trained as a mediator and who is noted for her excellent communication abilities and skillful negotiation of settlements that fulfill the needs of her clients. Mediation is an informal process. It is one way to avoid the court system. In a mediated divorce, everyone sits down together in a private office and they negotiate various issues that need to be agreed upon: child support, child custody, spousal support and property and debt division.

- Prenuptial and Post-Marital Agreements

We help people draft pre-marital (prenuptial) and post-marital (postnuptial) agreements that set parameters to protect your interests and safeguard your rights. One of the strong skills that our principal attorney Lori Watson possesses is an exceptional ability to negotiate diplomatically, while maintaining a strong position on her client's behalf. Ms. Watson has handled pre-marital agreements, divorces and other family law matters since 1996. She is focused on achieving the goals of her clients with persistence, preparation and a keen attention to detail.
