Law Firm Overview

Tilleke & Gibbins was established in 1893 in Siam (now Thailand) by Mr. William Alfred Tilleke, a Ceylonese, coincident with his successful defense of Phra Yod Muang Kwang, a Thai provincial governor, against accusations of murdering a French military officer in a border skirmish. In later years, Mr. Tilleke was bestowed a peerage and elevated by H.M. the King to eventually become Maha Ammart Tho Phraya Attakarn Prasiddhi. He was also appointed the second Attorney General of Siam. In 1902, he was joined by Mr. Ralph Gibbins, an Englishman, who remained with the Firm for five years before leaving to become a judge on the International Court.

The end of the century ushered in some significant changes for the new millennium. The most important of these was the creation, on January 1, 2000, of a new limited company, Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd., to accommodate the increased involvement of the Firm's lawyers in running the Firm. All the assets, personnel, and professional service functions of the Firm were transferred to the new company. In 2001, the Firm opened a new unit on Thailand's Eastern Seaboard to serve the legal needs of the numerous multinational companies situated there. Then in 2002, a major reorganization led to the naming of new partners to form a Management Committee charged with managing the day-to-day affairs of the Firm.

The Firm operates from the Tilleke & Gibbins Building, its four-story headquarters purposely designed and built in 1987 in a green zone opposite the American Embassy. In addition, to cope with its rapidly growing number of lawyers and staff, in early 2000 the Firm took over and refurbished two floors in the Tonson Building, about a four-minute walk from the Tilleke & Gibbins Building.

The Firm is the Thailand member of Lex Mundi, the world's leading association of independent law firms with 161 member firms; Multilaw, a multinational association of 62 independent law firms; State Capital Global Law Firm Group, an international association of more than 110 independent law firms; TAGLaw, a worldwide network of 125 independent law firms; and Pacific Rim Advisory Council, a strategic worldwide alliance of 30 top-tier independent law firms. It is also the law firm member for Thailand of World Services Group, a global multidisciplinary network of the world's leading professional service firms.
