Practice Areas
Practice Areas Description
- Spinal Cord InjuryA spinal cord injury (SCI) completely changes the life of the victim and those who are close to him or her. Paralysis is a life-altering experience which results in enormous financial costs to cover ongoing medical care, attendant care, medical equipment, adaptive technologies, specialized medicines and supplies. Since 1959, Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger have helped our California and Nevada clients with spinal cord injuries ranging from quadriplegia to paraplegia to hemiparesis to spinal cord contusions and even brain damage.
- Traumatic Brain Injury
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can mean lifetime disability, economic devastation, loss of independence, personality changes, loss of earning capabilities, loss of memory, and dependence on family and friends for supervision and care. The San Francisco, California lawyers at Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger know the problems facing those who have sustained a brain injury through the fault of another. We have worked closely with victims, their families, doctors, attendants, therapists, social workers and caseworkers for over 40 years.
- Child/Infant Brain Injury
Young children are the most susceptible victims of TBI. Injuries result from tripping and falling around the home, being shaken, or mistakes during delivery or prenatal care. For children, each year, TBI causes 3,000 deaths, 29,000 hospital visits, and 400,000 emergency room visits. The Walkup cerebral palsy and birth injury lawyers have represented the victims of obstetric negligence since 1959. We understand the special needs of infants who have suffered brain damage because of mismanaged labor and delivery.
- Temporal Lobe Brain Injury
The temporal lobe of the brain is positioned just behind the frontal lobe. Like the frontal lobe, it sits within pockets of the skull that allow it to shift. This extra room makes this part of the brain more susceptible to diffuse brain injury resulting from the brain moving back and forth against the rigid bone of the skull.
- Occipital Lobe Traumatic Brain Injury
The occipital lobe is in the rear portion of the brain buttressed up against the back of the skull. Running down the center of the occipital lobe is the Y-shaped calcarine fissure. The cells adjacent to both sides of this fissure form the primary visual cortex which receives neural information from the retinas and translates it into images. While the occipital lobe's most important function is converting neural impulses into images, the occipital lobe is only a pit stop on the way to sight.
- Frontal Lobe Brain Injury
The frontal lobe is in the front portion of the brain. It is the largest lobe and like the temporal lobe sits within a pocket-like bone in the skull. It is responsible for higher-level thinking including planning, personality, and judgment, and the motor processes required for speech. People often focus on the higher-level thinking aspect of the frontal lobe, overlooking its important role in enabling us to speak.
- Closed Head Injuries
Traumatic injuries to the brain can be grouped into two categories: penetrating injuries and closed head injuries. Closed head injuries are a common result when a blunt object strikes the skull but does not penetrate it. Such traumatic injuries can range widely in severity, including a mild concussion, death, and all variations in between. In the past, doctors largely believed that a closed head injury was less serious than a penetrating injury because it did not involve a fracture of the skull. Experience has since shown that the closed head injury can be every bit as severe as the penetrating injury because of brain swelling and inflammation.
- Brain Stem Injury
The brain stem connects the brain to the spinal cord and is composed of several major structures, including the medulla, pons, fourth ventricle, midbrain, thalamus, hypothalamus, and subthalamic region.
