Law Firm Overview FREE CONSULTATIONAt the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd., we are available to people accused of crimes in Chicago, Schaumburg, and the surrounding area in Illinois. Our law firm takes pride in the fact that we approach every case determined to win. Challenges other lawyers may consider impossible are something we welcome. We have overcome impossible odds before and we will do it again.
It is customary for us to rise above challenges. Along the way, we have gained a wide range of accolades, experiences, and accomplishments. Our team includes a former criminal prosecutor; giving us first-hand insight into how the other side approaches the serious cases we manage. We have seen their methods and we know how to defend against them.
Among our criminal defense lawyers is a member of Mensa International who, like the rest of the team, prides himself on his ability to apply intelligence to the most complex legal challenges in order to find answers others may not have found. We have an attorney certified by the Illinois Supreme Court to handle capital cases in which the accused has the most on the line, i.e. those involving the death penalty. This is a sign of our commitment to accepting, and overcoming, every challenge.
If you or someone you care about has been accused of a crime or questioned by the police, we urge you to get in touch with us as soon as possible. Whether you need an attorney familiar with defense against drunk driving penalties, protection from drug charges, or any other criminal matter, we can help. An early start is more time to your advantage. We want every opportunity to help protect your future.
Areas of Law
Areas of Law Description
At the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd., we provide legal representation and services in the following areas of practice:
- Criminal Defense
When the evidence is strong against their clients, many criminal defense lawyers become pessimistic and encourage their clients to plead guilty. At the Chicago law firm of Michael T. Norris and John W. Callahan, we give you hope. Rather than lie down and let the state run over you, criminal defense lawyers Michael T. Norris and John W. Callahan will fight for you. We will relentlessly subpoena evidence and other materials so that we understand both the strengths and the weaknesses of the state's case against you. Then we will conduct our own investigations to challenge the prosecutorís charges.
- DUI Defense
Some people think that if they fail a breathalyzer test, they could just as well plead guilty to a DUI charge. That is absolutely not true. At the criminal defense law firm of Michael T. Norris and John W. Callahan, we know how to fight DUI charges. Chicago DUI lawyers Michael T. Norris and John W. Callahan have obtained dismissals and not-guilty verdicts in dozens of DUI cases where our client flunked the breathalyzer test.
- Drug Offenses
While possession of a small amount of marijuana (less than 10 grams) is a misdemeanor, most drug charges are felonies and result in substantial fines and jail time. If the drug possession or sale is within 1,500 feet of a school, church, public park, or a movie theater (or if a firearm is in possession at the time of a drug arrest) the court may double the fine and the sentence. As a result of strict sentencing guidelines, drug convictions account for a significant part of the increase in Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) admissions over the past 10 years.
- Weapons Charge
In Illinois, if you do not have a FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card, you cannot carry a weapon in your car. If you have a FOID card, you can transport a gun anywhere in your vehicle as long as the gun is enclosed in a case or other container and it is unloaded. Most of the people our firm represents on weapons charges are ordinary citizens who are carrying a gun improperly in their car. Many don't even know it is illegal or how serious the charges are.
- White Collar Crimes
A conviction for a white-collar crime such as embezzlement, fraud, forgery, identity theft, larceny, accounting fraud, and elder fraud can take a heavy toll on your life. Many white-collar crimes are felonies, which carry lengthy prison sentences. Since employers routinely conduct background checks of prospective employees, a felony conviction can also make it nearly impossible to get a good job. At the criminal defense law firm of Michael T. Norris and John W. Callahan, we have obtained dismissals and not guilty verdicts in dozens of white collar crime cases.
- Internet Crime
Many Internet crimes are felonies, which carry lengthy prison sentences. Internet sex crimes also carry the possibility of lifetime registration as sex offender. Internet crimes are very serious charges, which can have a devastating affect on your future. At Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd., we have tried and achieved not guilty verdicts in serious internet crime cases, including eBay fraud, phishing, possession of child pornography, solicitation or enticement of a minor, and predatory criminal sexual assault.
- Sex Offenses
Because of the stigma attached to sexual offenses, many unstable or unscrupulous people will falsely accuse a family member, neighbor, teacher, or someone else they dislike of committing a sex crime. Sometimes prosecutors unknowingly rely on false statements and testimony. The results can be devastating, even if the allegations are proved false. Confronted with the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence and a lifetime of monitoring and registration, you cannot afford to plead guilty. You need a sex crimes defense lawyer who is willing to fight for you and who can poke holes in the prosecution's case.
- Felony Theft
Our attorneys at the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd. are dedicated to protecting the rights of people charged with felony theft. As aggressive lawyers, Mike Norris and John Callahan never consider defeat as a first option in a felony theft case, no matter how compelling the evidence is against you. Our first option is to beat the case by looking for opportunities to get it dismissed.
At the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd., we can defend you against armed robbery charges. Whether you are accused of using a gun or other weapon to commit a liquor store robbery, a bank robbery, a gas station robbery, a robbery of a person on the street or anything else, we can help. We are also ready to stand by your side against the charges that might come along with armed or strong arm robbery, such as kidnapping or evading arrest.
At the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd., and John W. Callahan, Ltd., we can defend against charges of residential burglary. If you are accused of breaking into and robbing a house, we can stand by your side. Whether you are accused of taking jewelry, money, electronics or any other property, you can turn to us for help. We are also available to stand up for your rights in cases involving burglary of commercial property, such as an auto dealership or an auto body shop.
- Aggravated Battery
The attorneys at the law offices of Michael T. Norris & John W. Callahan can help you if you have been accused of causing serious bodily harm to another person. When we take on aggravated battery cases, we do so with every intention of beating the charge. With decades of experience on our side, we will search for every possible opportunity to help you walk away without doing any jail time and with your record intact.
- Reckless Homicide
If you kill someone while driving drunk, you can be charged with reckless homicide. The stakes are high in these challenging cases. Our lawyers at the law offices of Michael T. Norris, Ltd. and John W. Callahan, Ltd. we are ready to take on these challenges. We are a team of attorneys with different, but complimentary, techniques. Our creative and aggressive representation can help you. We take every case with one goal in mind: to beat it.
Murder, the most serious criminal charge, can carry the risk of the most serious of all penalties: death. The state of Illinois believes these matters need to be handled with great care. They will not allow just any lawyer to provide criminal defense when capital punishment is involved. Only attorneys who have met the strict qualifications to be admitted to the capital litigation bar are certified to handle these matters. We have this certification. This means we have the energy, the experience and the knowledge to defend people accused of murder and facing the death penalty.
- Juvenile Offense
If your child is convicted of a sex offense, your child can be forced to register as a sex offender long past the time her or she is a juvenile. The first conviction on a drug charge can make your child ineligible for government student aid, loans, and grants for one year. A criminal record can also limit your child's future career choices. We represent children charged with all types of juvenile offenses, including vandalism, theft, shoplifting, credit card fraud, drug possession, trespassing, sex crime, DUI, and assault.
