Areas of Law Description

Reeves, Aiken, & Hightower LLP practices law in the following areas:

- Personal Injury and Accidents

Whether you’ve been involved in a car wreck with another automobile, tractor trailer truck, or motorcycle, this is what we do. With over 20 years trial experience, Attorney Robert J. Reeves has assisted many clients over the years just like you. And, as a former Registered Nurse (RN), he has personally treated serious accident victims and understands the long-term consequences of serious injury cases. We appreciate the fears you and your family are having during this crisis in your life.

- Auto Accidents

An auto accident can change your life forever in an instant. If you are on the road, you are at risk. We see it everyday. Someone is going too fast, not paying attention to the road, or is on their cell phone texting. Others are impaired or otherwise unsafe to drive, whether from alcohol or drugs. Sadly, you or your family member can be seriously injured or killed even if you do everything right. Fortunately, the trial lawyers of Reeves, Aiken & Hightower LLP are experienced auto accident attorneys who practice personal injury law and can help. It’s what we do everyday.

- Trucking Accidents

Large commercial “big rigs” or “18-wheelers” are the biggest, heaviest vehicles permitted on our nation’s highways. Because of their sheer size and weight, they can become unstable at highway speeds unless all rules are strictly followed. If not, “accidents” occur and almost always results in serious injury and/or death. State and federal agencies have tried to minimize the risks by enacting extensive regulations for the trucking industry. Nevertheless, many trucking companies and private drivers still refuse to follow basic safety and maintenance rules that have been put in place.

- Motorcycle Accidents

Whether you ride a Harley, a cruiser, or a scooter, there are certain basic steps you can take that help you avoid an accident and serious injury or death. After all, you are riding on only two wheels with no airbags, safety belts, or anything else around you for protection. A single mistake can cost you dearly. There are, however, certain minimum precautions you can take to help improve your safety and make it back home. With proper training and experience, you can enjoy one of life’s most enjoyable and relaxing pleasures – riding on the open road.

- Boating or Personal Watercraft Accidents

Any day on the lake is a great day. Whether it’s Lake Wylie, Lake Norman, or Lake Wateree, there is no better feeling than being away from work and on the water. As a proud Sea Ray owner, Attorney Robert J. Reeves knows the joys and the risks of being out at the lake. Unfortunately, not everyone is safe. There is too much drinking (BWI) and full throttle jockeys when the lake is crowded with other boaters and personal watercrafts (PWC). Not to mention the vulnerable swimmers and children in the water. And, unlike cars or trucks, boats do not have airbags or even seatbelts. As a result, even minor boat accidents can cause serious injury or death.

- Bicycle or Pedestrian Accidents

Because pedestrians and bicyclist have little to no protective gear, their injuries in these cases are often very serious, or even fatal, sometimes resulting in brain, head, or spinal cord injury. Because the injuries are so substantial, insurance companies aggressively defend whether they are legally liable and often “blame the victim” for causing the accident. For these reasons, it is critical to get an experienced personal injury lawyer involved as soon as possible. Never give a statement to an insurance adjuster or even the police until you have consulted an attorney.

- Defective Products and Medical Devices

Unfortunately, when manufacturers design and produce products, they can cut corners or make mistakes, and, when they do and those products injure someone, those manufacturers are liable for those injuries. If you have been injured by a product, talk to the experienced product defect attorneys at Reeves, Aiken & Hightower to schedule a free, private consultation to help you evaluate your claim.

- Negligent Security

We have all heard about slip and fall cases, but there is another huge source of premises liability, and that is negligence in security. When you are a patron of a business, you are entitled not only to assume that the floors are nice and dry providing good traction, but also to assume that your safety will be provided for to a certain extent. This is partially the reason why malls have security guards and the whole reason why clubs have bouncers. The usual rule that individuals are never liable for the criminal conduct of others is bent in negligent security cases resulting in personal injury because the law treats business owner’s tort against a business invitee differently than a tort between two unrelated individuals. If you or someone you know have been injured or killed at a business, seek help from an experienced personal injury attorney like those at Reeves, Aiken & Hightower.

- Child Injury

The loss of a child is always a catastrophic event, and the law often treats a child and his or her family favorably when the child is injured. When your child is injured, you need attorneys you can trust to enforce the rights of your child and your own rights. The lawyers at Reeves, Aiken & Hightower know this and are experienced in the issues that are especially important in cases involving an injury to a child, like psychological injury and scarring. If your child or a child close to you has been injured, talk to the experienced child injury attorneys of Reeves, Aiken & Hightower.

- Brain Injury / Head Trauma

There is no more serious injury than a closed head or brain injury. Injured victims who suffer brain trauma seldom recover fully and are often left with permanent injuries that will change their lives forever. These patients are usually in comas and are kept alive on ventilators and powerful medications. In many cases, families have to make the heart breaking decision to let their loved ones go. As a former intensive care unit Registered Nurse (RN), Attorney Robert J. Reeves has personally treated head injury patients and helped their families cope during the during the most unimaginable time in their life. He knows and understands what you are going through.

- Nursing Home Abuse

As our parents and grandparents get older, their physical and mental needs start to change, sometimes very quickly. They become less able to care for themselves, and ultimately, need full time care. Undoubtedly, one of the hardest decisions in life is to put a loved one into a nursing home. You’ve heard the horror stories, and you immediately feel tremendous guilt and fear. You check out the available facilities, as best you can, and then hope and pray everything will be fine. We hope so, too. But, things don’t always turn out the way they should.

- Wrongful Death

Death can occur in an instant. Oftentimes, you don’t even get to say goodbye. Your world has just stopped, but everything seems to be happening all at once. You are devastated and don’t know what to do or where to turn. You have many questions but very few answers. People are asking you to make so many decisions when you are still trying to figure out what happened. There is no greater loss than losing a loved one, but it is especially hard when you don’t have any warning. Someone else’s negligence can change your life forever in a fatal accident. We are experienced wrongful death attorneys and are here to help get you through this nightmare and find those answers. We represent and protect those left behind.

- Workers' Compensation

We love workers’ compensation cases. Although many lawyers “dabble” in this area, we do it every day. After being injured at work, many of our clients are initially afraid of losing their jobs and are not sure if they even want to pursue a claim. In these difficult times, these are good people in tough financial situations that need help. Attorney Robert J. Reeves has practiced workers compensation law every day for over 20 years and knows how to protect your rights as well as your job. As a former insurance defense lawyer, he understands what a carrier needs in order to quickly evaluate your claim and get your benefits started. And, he is not afraid to fight if he needs to in order to get what you deserve.

- Criminal Defense

In civil cases, all twelve (12) jurors must be convinced. In criminal cases, only one (1) juror is needed to avoid a conviction and force the State to retry or plea your charges. With over twenty-one (21) years of litigation experience, Mr. Reeves stands ready to go to Court to fight for you. In our criminal defense practice, we request a jury trial and then carefully evaluate all evidence the State has against you. We then sit down and review your options on whether to accept a negotiated plea or go to trial. The decision, of course, is always yours. We will be there throughout the entire process and guide you to make the best decision.

- DUI/DWI

Although a misdemeanor, being charged with “drunk driving” is a very serious offense. Even if it is your first one and you did not cause an accident or injure anyone, the stigma and long-term consequences are quite harsh. If convicted or plead guilty, you will lose your license and can potentially lose your job. You will never be able to get reasonable automobile insurance rates once you disclose a prior DUI on your permanent record. While we aggressively defend all types of criminal charges, our primary criminal practice is SC DUI and NC DWI cases.

- Social Security Disability

Because many of our clients are seriously injured from vehicle accidents or workers compensation claims, we also help them apply for Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) benefits. The same evidence that we develop as part of their injury case is then used to support their SSDI claim. We assemble all of your records and then give you a complete copy to submit for review. While many clients are often approved on their first try, we stay with them if they are not and work with Attorney Rachel Pickard who limits her practice to this very important area of law. Just know that we will be there for you until the job is done.
