Law Firm Overview
The Slinde Nelson partners emerged from large firms as refugees bent on delivering commercial litigation, real estate, and construction law solutions built on sound business judgment, rather than billable-hour requirements. The right attorney is put on the job the first time around. We will not pass your case off to green associates and double or triple charge you for a review or re-review of their work. We only bill you once, and we only bill you for what you need. Since 2001 Du Val Business Law has been providing corporate clients and entrepreneurs with a highly unique alternative to the large-law firm experience.Slinde Nelson provides dispute-resolution solutions in a practical, client-driven manner. Traditional law firms too often view dispute resolution as a litigation billing machine. But that’s not right: dispute resolution does not necessarily include the cost of formal litigation. The most effective dispute-resolution strategy is dispute avoidance. We give our clients strategies to avoid litigation. We streamline dispute-resolution procedures and maximize the potential for resolving conflict without the cost of protracted litigation.
And we offer more than strictly "legal" advice on starting or operating your business. Our unique experience allows us to advise you on the day-to-day practical demands of running it, too. Our business is to understand your business. Our goal is to structure and pursue legal and business strategies that don't just prevent problems or maintain compliance — we want to help you advance your business goals.

Areas of Law Description
- Business Law
Besides being lawyers, we've been much like you. We've founded, grown, managed, expanded, invested in, counseled and sold businesses of our own. So we can't help but to offer more than strictly "legal" advice on starting up your business. We will advise you on the day-to-day practical demands of running it, too. We genuinely enjoy helping our clients succeed. We're called upon regularly to help or advise on numerous issues: business formations, corporations and LLCs, business contracts, trademarks, technology Law, employment law, buying and selling a business, raising capital and franchising law.
- Business and Commercial Litigation
Our litigation department has built a remarkable record of success in recent years and has a proven track record in finding strategic leverage in any business dispute. Our firm has the talent and technology to handle any opponent. For proof, just take a look at our lawyers' results. We level the playing field by providing small and mid-sized businesses with representation at the same level of sophistication enjoyed by larger corporations. Our firm is proficient in electronic discovery and computer forensics and uses a unique, leading-edge system for delivering courtroom presentations. We handle cases involving business fraud litigation, breach of contracts, business dissolution and insurance litigation.
- Technology Law
Technology agreements are frequently complex commercial transactions, requiring a multitude of supporting documentation and attachments such as Statements of Work (SOWs), pricing, warranty, maintenance, escalation process, acceptance testing procedures, collocation or hosting, equipment leasing, policies and procedures. With the entrepreneur's legal budget in mind we start with proven templates.
- Franchising Law
Franchising can be an exhilarating experience — when all goes well. We're here to help make sure our clients fully understand what franchising is all about before signing on the dotted line. For potential franchisees, we provide opportunity and contract analysis. We often talk a lot to our clients, so they know exactly what they're getting into. At Slinde Nelson Du Val Business Law, we provide comprehensive legal services for one low, flat fee. For entrepreneurs, we are available to structure your business and make it an attractive, successful franchise opportunity.
- Real Estate
Our real estate practice serves a wide range of Oregon and Washington clients in all phases of commercial development and management, residential development, commercial acquisitions and sales, financing and deal structure and restructure/workout. We represent banking institutions in their efforts to collect unpaid debts and otherwise resolve troubled assets. We also help investors navigate the complex process of acquiring and/or leveraging distressed properties and loan portfolios and all types of borrowers negotiating workouts with public and private lenders as well as defending judicial and non-judicial foreclosures.
- Construction Litigation
Slinde Nelson represents clients in all forms of real estate dispute resolution, including property acquisition and sale disputes, title and boundary disputes, easement disputes, environmental contamination/clean up, judicial and non-judicial foreclosure actions, eminent domain proceedings and landlord/tenant disputes. We also litigate lien claims, breach of contract claims, warranty claims, and commercial/residential construction defect disputes.
- Asset Protection
Asset protection is often one of the goals of thorough estate and tax planning. You have many options in this area, and we are well-versed in all of them, including: asset protection trusts, offshore trusts, asset splitting, homestead exemptions and charitable donations and gifts. We conduct detailed examinations for each client, determining what areas of their business could lead to litigation, and therefore the possible loss of business or personal assets.
- Employment Law
Properly documenting and memorializing the employment relationship, and keeping those employment contracts fresh and relevant, can avoid confusion that often results in litigation. Employee handbooks, company policies, disciplinary procedures, procedures for clocking in and out, these are the types of issues that end up in litigation when an employer fails to engage in preventative legal maintenance. In the end, prevention up front is infinitely cheaper than back end repair work. But not all employment disputes can be avoided. At Slinde Nelson, we handle all types of Oregon and Washington employment disputes efficiently and effectively: non-competition agreement litigation; trade secret and business tort litigation; wage claims; overtime claims; wrongful discharge; discrimination and retaliation claims; and whistleblower claims.
- Elder Abuse
Abuse can be physical or financial. Physical abuse includes causing injury, serious neglect, nonconsensual sexual contact, or intimidation of the elderly person. Financial abuse generally includes wrongfully taking or threatening to take money or property from an elderly person. The State of Oregon has made protecting our state's senior citizens from abuse one of its top priorities. Oregon's elder abuse statute is one of the most powerful in the country. It allows for the recovery of economic damages as well as damages for emotional distress and pain and suffering. Together, under the Oregon statute, those damages are tripled to punish the offender. The victim of elder abuse will also be reimbursed for attorney's fees expended in bringing the action.
