Law Firm Overview
FREE CONSULTATION
Springstead & Bartish Law, PLLC is a Grand Rapids criminal law firm that represents clients in federal and state criminal defense cases throughout Michigan. We have a satellite office located in Grand Rapids to serve more clients in Michigan.Springstead & Bartish Law, PLLC is led by a former active-duty Judge Advocate General and two former F.B.I. Special Agents. This unique experience allows us to better understand what prosecutors and investigators think, how they will build their cases, the strategies they are likely to pursue, and the best means of countering the prosecution’s case and presenting a compelling defense. There simply is no substitute for this type of experience.
West Michigan is our home. This is important because we believe a criminal defense attorney is most effective when he knows the prosecutors as well as the judges on a case. Then the attorney can tailor the most effective defense possible to the case being presented by the prosecutor and to the judge presiding over the case. This approach has earned us a reputation as honorable yet formidable advocates. In fact, both Mr. Springstead and Mr. Bartish are Rising Stars according to Super Lawyers magazine in 2011.

Areas of Law Description
Springstead & Bartish Law, PLLC represents clients in the following areas of practice:
- Criminal Defense
At Springstead & Bartish Law, PLLC, we put our criminal law experience to work every day to protect the rights of criminal defense clients and to achieve the best possible outcomes for them. As a former Active Duty J.A.G. Attorney and former F.B.I. Agents we understand state and federal criminal laws and how to make that knowledge work for our clients.
- Assault
There are lots of different kinds of assaults under the law. When you or someone you know is charged with an assault, it is imperative that you have an attorney who is knowledgeable and experienced in handling these types of cases and will vigorously defend you.
- Battery
A battery is basically an unwanted physical touching. An assault is essentially the threat of immediate battery. A simple assault/battery is a very common offense and covers a wide variety of fights from heated arguments with a threat of a battery to bar fights to schoolyard fights.
- Domestic Violence
A charge of domestic violence (DV) is basically an assault or battery that occurs with someone with whom you have a domestic or dating relationship, e.g., husband/wife, parent/child, girlfriend/boyfriend, child in common, or roommate. If you are convicted of a DV, usually by plea, and the Court accepts your plea, the Court will not enter a conviction on your record if you successfully complete the terms of probation.
- Criminal Sexual Conduct
There are a number of different charges, which depend on certain aggravating factors in the case, that can be filed when an allegation of sexual assault comes to light. The penalties vary drastically depending on the severity of the offense charged. Charges of criminal sexual conduct (CSC) are stated in terms of degrees or severity of the offense.
- Minor in Possession (MIP)
Mistakes happen. Do not let a youthful indiscretion become a permanent mark on a young person’s criminal history and future. There are a number of different ways to avoid having an MIP become a permanent mark on a minor’s record. If you or someone you know has been charged with an MIP, do not plead guilty to an MIP without first consulting with an attorney who is knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with MIP charges in West Michigan.
- Drunk Driving (DUI)
Drunk driving also commonly known as driving under the influence (DUI), operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor (OUIL), operating while intoxicated (OWI), operating while visibly impaired (OWVI)) has become a highly-regulated area of the law, as victim advocacy groups lobby for tough laws to curb drunk driving and politicians yield to public pressure to “get tough” on drunk driving.
- Driver License Restoration
Losing your driving privileges in Michigan can have a devastating effect on your life. For most people, a driver's license is a necessity to maintain employment, to care for children, to go to school, to make required medical appointments, or to simply manage day-to-day tasks. Michigan, unfortunately, has some of the most severe driver license sanctions in the country.
- Federal Criminal Defense
Our attorneys’ dedication to their clients resulted many successes over the years. This includes avoiding federal charges, obtaining reduced charges, acquittals at trial, reduced sentences, and overturning sentences in the court of appeals. We represent clients charged with or under investigation by a grand jury for armed bank and credit union robbery.
