- Love Canal Toxic Exposure

Love Canal, originally named “Model City” in the 1890s, was the failed brainchild of William T. Love and was abandoned before it could be completed. The land, eventually sold to Hooker Electrochemical Co., was used as a dump for chemical waste from 1942 to 1953. It was then covered with soil and sold to the Niagara Falls school board. A school was soon built and a working-class neighborhood flourished over the old chemical dump. Then, hazardous waste began seeping through the top soil.
