Covenant Marriage Basics

Covenant marriage is a specific type of marriage, noted for its strict nature and only legally recognized by a few states. Even in these states, couples can choose between regular marriages and covenant marriages.

Louisiana was the first state to establish covenant marriage in the U.S., in 1997. The general idea behind it is to preserve the marriage union and make it more difficult to divorce. These types of marriages require counseling before entering into the contract and again if the couple chooses to separate and divorce.
