2013 Lawyer Development Institute: Re-Imagining the Legal Workforce
October 4, 2013
CLE - Live Seminar
USA
Description
In today’s competitive market, law firms are bending the cost curve to meet client needs, which often means lower blended billing rates. To that end, firms are now employing a range of non-traditional lawyers in addition to traditional associates and partners: staff attorneys of all sorts, from contract and discovery attorneys to mid-level and senior counsel. Many of these lawyers work on-site, but others may work in back offices or telecommute.
The growth of these alternative track positions impacts all of the firm’s systems, including lawyer hiring, training, supervision, and quality control. The managing partner of one AmLaw 100 firm has recently said that he expects alternative track lawyer hiring to constitute up to 50% of all lawyer hiring for his firm in the future. Another AmLaw 100 firm has already implemented a competency framework for its discovery lawyers. The ability to staff and manage integrated lawyer teams to deliver high quality, cost-effective legal solutions in an increasingly competitive global market will be a differentiator of law firm success in the years ahead.
For those responsible for lawyer development, the questions are critical. What staffing models are most effective? How is hiring impacted? What is needed to ensure quality legal service across multiple tracks? How are training, supervision, and evaluation implemented? What is the effect of alternative staffing on lawyers following traditional tracks?
The 2013 Lawyer Development Institute will address these issues from the perspective of PD professionals, who are increasingly called on to work with a variety of other key players to meet the needs of – even shape – today’s emerging staffing models. Join us to learn how firms are re-imagining their legal workforces, and how lawyer development can meet the challenge as firms adapt their professional ranks to pitch, win, and solve complex problems for results-oriented and value-driven clients.
