Description
Young people may come in contact with courts in a variety of ways both in the civil and criminal jurisdiction. The presence of young people in courts and tribunals provides challenges for judicial administration, for government and non-government agencies involved in work with young people, for law enforcement authorities and for legal practitioners affecting young people, their families and the community. A number of issues have been identified by the Committee, namely:
Young victims and offenders, Sexual offences involving young people,
Sentencing options and the role of therapeutic sentencing for young people, Youth homelessness, Family violence and child protection, The interplay between the Family Court and State Child Protection systems/legislation, Young people and Family Law – the paramount interests of children, the impact of conflict on child development and children’s perspectives on the justice system, The effect of drugs, alcohol and chroming on young people, The psychology of anti-social behaviour
