A Legal Week survey in March 2012 reported:
"Almost three quarters of UK partners (72%) taking part said there needs to be significantly more consolidation in the sector, including 22% of respondents who stated that the legal market is far too fragmented. In contrast, only a handful of respondents (13%) said there was no need for more consolidation."
Most partners believe that their firm needs to grow. The questions, "How big should we be?" and "How will it happen?" are often not given the thought required. As a result firms line up like teenagers at a school disco, nervously eying each other up before beginning tentative steps to dance to a changing rhythm only to discover that the other person has no more idea of the dance than you do.
