Description
Southeast Asia has been growing as an important region in contributing multilateral development in international economic and political issues. It has been indicated from the development of law and human rights as current progress in promoting regional position in international relation. However, there has been a situation where countries in Southeast Asia have been often facing communal conflicts, rights deprivation, economic marginalization and tremendous corruption, which those have been systematically influencing to the practice of law enforcement and rule of law in general.
In the context of economic globalization, there are demands from society, countries and ASEAN as an international community to response such conflict situation by increasing the role of lawyers and its legal education, especially in responding the problems, improving social justice and progressive education.
Hence, the conference addresses how actually the development of legal education in Southeast Asia, to what extent such education has responded rule of law and human rights situation, and how lawyers and their legal professional skills have been contributing to solve or mediate the problem.
Topics
There are two special topics for plenaries:
1. Challenges Facing Legal Education in the 21st Century
2. Clinical and Other Experiential Education: Law in Social Context
The panel topics are related to the issues
1. Legal Education and Its Roles in Southeast Asia
2. Legal Education versus Legal Profession: The Question of Social Justice
3. The Law of the Legal Profession and the Code of Ethics for Lawyers
4. Lawyers, Human Rights Education and Access to Justice
5. Legal Aid, Legal Education and Paralegalism in Southeast Asia
6. Teaching Methodology and the Gaps between Theory and Practice in Law
All abstracts are due by May 15, 2013.
