If you've been hit by a drunk driver make sure you get seen by a physician as soon as possible. Your health comes first. You can file your claim with the insurance company and talk with a lawyer later.

Find out the extent of your injuries first, then deal with all of the other things. While it may seem like you have a great case that you should be able to pursue on your own, you still may be facing an uphill battle. If you want to get compensated as much as possible it's a good idea to talk to a personal injury lawyer to help you.

Even though the insurance companies want to settle
drunk driving claims quickly, they will not offer you as much as they would if had an attorney representing you. This is because they know that if they don't offer you full value for your case you will probably settle anyways because you may not know what is fair and because you don't have much of an alternative.

If you find a good attorney to represent you, you will be able to maximize your recovery while you let him or her do all of the work. Further, the insurance carriers are more concerned when an attorney is involved and are more likely to offer you fair value for your injuries when they see a reputable attorney is fighting for you. This is so because they know that if you are properly represented by an attorney, the attorney may file suit against the insured and seek punitive damages.

Punitive damages are designed to punish the other party and are available when you're hit by a drunk driver.
