Thailand Joins the Madrid System on Trademark Registration and Protection
The Madrid system, established in 1891 under the Madrid Agreement, is a protocol which offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for the registration and the management of brands around the world. It allows the request of protection in up to 115 territories for now on, of the System’s other 98 members.
Indeed, Thailand will become the 99th member of the Madrid System. As of August 7, 2017, the Thai government signed on to the Madrid protocol for the International Registration of Marks with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The Madrid Protocol will be effective on Thailand on 7 November 2017. From that date, Thai trademark owners could start using the Madrid Protocol to protect their trademarks across the 114 other Madrid System territories through their local Intellectual Property Office. International brand owners from other Madrid member countries can also seek trademark protection in Thailand through the Madrid System as well.
One of the advantages of this protocol is that foreign companies and trademark owners can seek trademark protection through the Madrid System when selling their products and services in Thailand.
Anybody linked with one of the Madrid system members can apply for trademark protection by filing an international application and by paying some fees.
Those fees include a basic fee (around € 572), and an additional cost depending on the nature of your mark, where you want to protect it, and how many classes of goods and services will be covered by your registration.
