In the case of Erbís palsy, the network of nerves running from the base of the neck through the shoulder can be stretched or broken during birth. Since this network of nerves is responsible for providing movement and feeling to the arm, hand, and fingers, injury to the brachial plexus can result in Erbís palsy. When the upper nerves of the brachial plexus are injured, a baby may not be able to move his shoulder even though he may be able to move his fingers.
