    The Faculty of Law was established in 1980 though law studies at the University of Bergen originally started in 1969. The Faculty has about 100 faculty staff and currently around 2200 students studying for a Master Degree in Law.

    Several departments of the Faculty of Law can still be found in the historic buildings in the heart of Oslo, where Norwegian law professionals have received their education since the buildings were new in 1852. Interest in the study of law has accelerated in later years, one result of which is that there has been some difficulty in finding enough qualified instructors.

    The Faculty of Law was founded in 1987 and is the most recent addition to the University of Tromsø. Its popularity resulted in restricted admission from 1990. The Faculty is authorized to grant Master of law and Doctorates in Law. Since the autumn 1989, when the first candidates received their degrees, and up to the autumn 2003, 725 candidates have graduated from the University of Tromsø. In addition, the Faculty has arranged seven doctoral dissertations.
